Portrait Techniques

1. Take unfocused shots

By taking unfocused shots you can show the real emotion of the subject.  You can do this by focusing on something other than the subject or just un-focus the entire image to create a different emotion.

2. Alter your perspective

By shooting from a different angle, such as being higher or lower than the subject.  This can create an interest or bond with the subject.

3. Play with eye contact

You can have the subject look at something within the frame of the photo, like another person or a thing to show their bond.  Another thing that you could do is have the subject looking at something beyond the frame of the photo, this can create intrigue.

4. Shoot candidly

Shooting candidly especially works for children and people who look posed while taking pictures.
